Another Plastic Innovation

With the Pacific Garbage Dump increasing by a ton each day, more people are heeding to the call like Richart Sowa. Plastic is a material that is molded and can only be torched down one more time when recycled. This makes the chemicals tough to digest for mother nature so many are finding, like Richart, to re-use the plastic.
David de Rothschild, founder of Adventure Ecology, has made a catamaran that is supported by plastic bottles.
This is a video of the founder giving a tour of the boat before it set sail in 2009. Here is a link to their facebook page where they have links to their twitter account that they updated while aboard the plastiki.  https://www.facebook.com/plastiki
The plastiki sailed from San Fransisco, took water samples from the Pacific Garbage Patch, and landed in Sydney, AU.
Adventure Ecology is a great organization that uses creative minds to bring awareness to the state of our eco-system.

Spiral Island

This is a video featuring the founder of Joysxee Island; off the coast of Mexico, this island floats on recycled plastic bottles. This is one project that turned the pacific garbage dump into an innovative use of plastic.

International Coastal Cleanup

Every year the Ocean Conservancy Group dedicates one day to clean up the trash on our coastlines. They realize that the amount of plastic trash in our oceans outnumbers the marine life by a ratio of 6 to 1. An American on average throws away 185 pounds of trash and just with the millions living in NYC we cannot do enough in one day. This is a great event that raises awareness of how important our recycling habits can be but we must find other innovative ways to stop the pollution of our oceans.

Pacific Garbage Dump

On the list of Top 25 censored stories of 2012 I am choosing to report on #12, the Pacific garbage dump. This subject is on the censored list for the same reason that we aren't seeing anymore BP commercials. As an American I can admit that my attention span is minimal. When something like an oil spill happens (repeatedly) we usually spend a week or two criticizing the company until their public relations states that they will make a change. As great as their work can be it doesn't last more than a year. The more we report on this the more likely people are going to make changes in their houses to help keep the Earth running efficiently.

My family of three usually goes to the grocery store at least once a week. We are always using the plastic grocery bags for our lunches. We just got a cat and to clean the litter we use the plastic bags as well. He uses the bags more than we do so for groceries we needed an alternative. Many grocer companies are selling recycled and reusable grocery bags so they don't burn through as much plastic. These bags hold twice the amount of groceries and are just as durable as paper bags. Besides starting a compost pile in the backyard the family feels like it is contributing to the environment. I thought that reporting on this topic would bring awareness so that by 2020, along with Obama's Clean Energy Act, we could have a greater percentage of Americans working towards a cleaner environment.
